England book place in Euros last-eight with win over Germany

Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane scored late on as England defeated Germany at Wembley.

Sterling tapped in from Luke Shaw’s pass late on to open the scoring before Kane headed in his first of the tournament to put the game beyond doubt.

Sweden or Ukraine meet later this evening with the winner meeting England in the quarter-final on Saturday.

Sterling has been in superb form for England for the entire tournament and could have got England off the mark early but Manuel Neuer pulled off a superb save.

Timo Werner then went through at the other end but Jordan Pickford dived low to keep it out.

Kane had a superb chance at the end of the first half from close range but a German foot somehow stopped him from putting the ball into an open goal.

Kai Havertz forced Pickford into another superb save after the restart with a shot from outside the penalty area but Germany largely failed to threaten from then on in.

Sterling finally made the breakthrough with 15 minutes remaining when Grealish and Shaw linked up down the left before finding the Manchester City winger inside the six-yard box to sidefoot the ball in.

Thomas Muller should have levelled when Thomas Muller was put through on goal by Havertz, but the Bayern Munich forward’s shot went wide of the left post from 20 yards.

Grealish was central to England’s second too and planted a perfect cross onto the head of Kane to put the result beyond doubt and send England through.
