Barnsley have sacked manager Jose Morais following the team’s relegation from the Championship.

The 52-year-old joined the club in February and won just three matches in charge before a 4-1 loss to Derby County sent them into the relegation zone on the final day.

“Following a relegation clause within their contracts, the employment of Jose Morais, (assistant head coach) Dimas Teixeira and (physical coach) Joao Cunha has been terminated with immediate effect,” a club statement said.

“Barnsley Football Club would like to place on record their thanks to Jose, Dimas and Joao for their efforts whilst in charge of the first team.

“The club acknowledges the disappointment of relegation and shares the view of supporters that this has been a disappointing season of results.

“The aim is now to have a proactive summer both on and off the pitch, in order to gain promotion back to the Championship.”

Burton Albion were also relegated this afternoon and will join Sunderland in League One next season.
