Qatar stun Switzerland with late equaliser to earn historic World Cup result
Qatar scored a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time as they shocked Switzerland to earn their first-ever point at the World Cup.
Boualem Khoukhi headed in from Homam El Amin’s cross in the 94th minute to snatch a 1-1 draw.
Switzerland dominated the match but a lack of quality in front of goal will be a worry for manager Murat Yakin.
Breel Embolo had given Switzerland the lead in the 17th minute from the penalty spot when Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada missed the ball and clattered Remo Freuler instead.
Nottingham Forest forward Dan Ndoye saw a good chance saved by Abunada while Ruben Vargas and Embolo also missed quality chances.
For Switzerland, they were hoping a convincing win over Group B’s lowest-ranked team would set them up ahead of their game against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday.
For Qatar, the equaliser will banish some ghosts of the 2022 World Cup, where they set records as the worst host nation in tournament history. They meet co-hosts Canada in Vancouver on Thursday.
