Andy Murray has been knocked out of Wimbledon after a third-round loss to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov.

The former British number one had come through nine sets in the first two rounds to beat 24th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili and Germany’s Oscar Otte but it was one step too far for Murray.

Tenth-seed Shapovalov impressed the Centre Court crowd to triumph 6-4 6-2 6-2.

Shapovalov raced into a 5-1 lead in the opener before Murray hit back to win the next three games.

The 22-year-old saved three break points in his next service game though before taking the set.

Shapovalov showed why he was recently in the top 10 players in the world when he won the first four games of the second set.

Again, Shapovalov was superb on his serve, saving five break points in a mammoth game six to take control of the match.

And there was no way back for Murray in the third set either. In a mirror of the first two sets, Shapovalov took control on the way to a 4-0 lead before holding out to complete the win.

Murray’s defeat leaves Cameron Norrie as Britain’s sole representative in the men’s draw and he meets former world number one Roger Federer tomorrow. Teenager Emma Raducanu plays Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in the women’s singles.
