Aaron Mooy scores winner as Huddersfield Town beat Newcastle United

Huddersfield Town have won their second successive Premier League match after beating Newcastled United 1-0.

Aaron Mooy’s curling shot nestled into the top right corner to secure the points for Huddersfield.

Christian Atsu’s poor clearance gifted Tom Ince the first chance of the match but his shot from the edge of the area was saved by Rob Elliot.

Newcastle then went up the other end and Matt Ritchie forced Jonas Lossl into a fantastic diving save to keep the score level.

Huddersfield were the better team in the first half though with Steve Mounie and Ince combining to cause problems for the Newcastle defence.

Dwight Gayle could have opened the scoring in the 35th minute. He received the ball inside the six-yard box from Atsu but Christopher Schindler made a last-ditch tackle to avert the danger.

Huddersfield broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. Mooy exchanged passes with Elias Kachunga before curling the ball into the far corner of the net.

Newcastle could not threaten after the goal. Mikel Merino sent a through-ball all the way through to Lossl before Javier Manquillo’s cross went long.

They did finally create an opportunity in the 68th minute but Joselu’s shot was turned behind after a one-two with Atsu. From the corner, Ayoze Perez fired over the crossbar from six yards.

Newcastle substitute Jacob Murphy nearly made an instant impact but his shot from inside the box was blocked.

The Terriers have risen to second in the Premier League table while Newcastle remain on zero points.
