Sunderland have sacked manager Chris Coleman following the club’s relegation to League One.

The former Wales boss became Sunderland manager in November but The Black Cats were relegated for the second successive season on April 21, following a defeat to fellow strugglers Burton Albion.

A club statement said: “We would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Chris and Kit [Simons] for their tireless efforts in what has been a hugely disappointing season for everyone involved with the club.”

Sunderland are guaranteed to finish bottom of the Championship table and will play in the third tier of English football for the first time in their history.
