Heather Watson limped out of the Miami Open in the first round after a straight-sets defeat to Serbia’s Nina Stojanovic.

The world number 65 suffered her fifth defeat in six matches against a player placed 30 ranks below her.

Watson got off to the worst possible start when she lost the opening four games and never recovered as Stojanovic took the first set 6-4.

It got worse for Watson in the second set too. The 28-year-old held serve to open but Stojanovic stormed ahead and won six successive games to seal her place in the second round.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Britain’s Cameron Norrie defeated Yoshihito Nishioka and Katie Boulter got past Krystina Pliskova.

Johanna Konta, Jack Draper and Liam Broady are all in action on Thursday.
