England defeated by Switzerland in U21 Euro opener

England have been beaten by Switzerland in their opening game of the Under-21 European Championship.

Dan Ndoye finished beautifully with 12 minutes to spare as England struggled in Slovenia.

The result leaves England facing an uphill task to reach the knockout stage this summer with a huge improvement needed against Portugal and Croatia.

Switzerland could have opened the scoring early on when Andi Zeqiri broke clear but Aaron Ramsdale came out to stop the shot.

Callum Hudson-Odoi then had a chance at the other end but his shot fizzed past the left post.

After a quiet first half, Bastien Toma should have put the Swiss ahead. He found himself in space inside the penalty area but his shot thumped off the outside of the right post.

Hudson-Odoi produced England’s only shot on target of the afternoon at a free kick but his shot was tipped wide by Anthony Racioppi.

The deadlock was finally broken when Ndoye cut in from the left before looping the ball over Ramsdale into the top right corner.

Portugal and Croatia will meet later today, with England then facing Portugal on Sunday.
