Kyle Edmund has been knocked out of the French Open after a third-round defeat to Italy’s Fabio Fognini.

The British number one led after three sets but Fognini struck back to win 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 in three hours and 36 minutes.

Edmund started the opening set perfectly with a break but then lost five games in a row as Fognini took the lead.

The British mumber one hit straight back though, racing towards a 5-1 lead in the second before being pegged back to 5-4. A break in the 10th game though saw Edmund move level.

Another good set saw Edmund hold throughout to take the lead but the match drew level once again when Fognini broke twice in the fourth.

The decider went to serve until the last game. With Edmund serving at 5-4 down, he lost the opening three points before Fognini won match point at the second attempt.
