Burnley have signed Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst for a fee believed to be around £12m.

Weghorst, a Dutch international, has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract, and is expected to join the matchday squad for their crucial game against Watford this weekend.

The 6ft 6in target man comes in as a direct replacement for Chris Wood, who moved to Newcastle United earlier in the transfer window.

“Wout is a player that our scouts have been strong on for some time and we feel that he can add to all that we do at Burnley Football Club,” Burnley manager Sean Dyche told the club’s official website.

“His signing is a continued show of the Club’s and team’s development. We wish Wout well as he earns the right to push our group forwards.”

Weghorst has scored six goals in 18 Bundesliga appearances this season. He will wear the number nine shirt vacated by Wood earlier this month.
