World Cup Preview: Iran

Iran arrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup under circumstances unlike any other team in the tournament. Team Melli have qualified for a fourth consecutive World Cup and possess one of the strongest squads in Asia, but their preparations have been overshadowed by political tensions and conflict involving co-host nation the United States. Despite the off-field challenges, Iran remain determined to finally reach the knockout stages of a World Cup for the first time in their history.

Egypt, June 27, 4am
How They Qualified
Iran once again demonstrated their dominance in Asian football by progressing comfortably through the AFC qualification process. Team Melli secured their place in North America with games to spare, extending an impressive run that has seen them qualify for four consecutive World Cups. Their campaign was built upon defensive organisation, experience and the goals of their established attacking stars. Qualification confirmed Iran’s status as one of Asia’s most consistent international sides.
The Manager
Amir Ghalenoei is one of the most successful coaches in Iranian football history. The experienced manager returned for a second spell in charge of the national team in 2023 after a decorated club career that included multiple Persian Gulf Pro League titles with Esteghlal and Sepahan. Known for his pragmatic approach and ability to organise disciplined teams, Ghalenoei has guided Iran through qualification while overseeing a gradual transition between generations. The 62-year-old faces perhaps the most challenging circumstances of any coach at this World Cup, with off-field issues threatening to distract from events on the pitch.
The Star
Mehdi Taremi remains the focal point of Iran’s attack and one of the finest footballers the country has ever produced. After making his name with Persepolis, the striker enjoyed successful spells in Portugal with Rio Ave and Porto before moving to Olympiacos via a short spell at Inter Milan. Taremi has scored more than 60 goals for his country and has consistently delivered on the biggest occasions, including at World Cup and Asian Cup level. His intelligent movement, finishing ability and leadership make him the player most capable of guiding Iran into the knockout stages.
The Familiar Face
Saman Ghoddos played a valuable role as Brentford established themselves in the Premier League, earning a reputation for his technical quality and tactical intelligence. Born in Sweden to Iranian parents, Ghoddos has represented Iran since 2017 and has become one of the most experienced members of the squad. His understanding of the game and ability to operate in several positions make him a useful option for Team Melli. In 2014, he moved to Kalba in the UAE after four years in West London.
Did you know?
Iran are the highest-ranked Asian nation never to have reached the knockout stages of a World Cup. Despite appearing at seven previous tournaments, they have never progressed beyond the group phase.
The Prediction
Round of 32
Iran possess enough quality to challenge Egypt and New Zealand for a place behind group favourites Belgium. The expanded 48-team format significantly improves their chances of progression, as four points could be enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. However, no nation faces greater off-field disruption. Iran’s squad has been based in Tijuana, Mexico throughout the tournament following visa and security complications, while political tensions stemming from the recent conflict between Iran and the United States have dominated the build-up. Reports have indicated that the team must travel into the United States for matches before returning to Mexico, creating unique logistical challenges during the competition. If they can remain focused on football, Team Melli have every chance of finally reaching the knockout rounds for the first time. If both Iran and USA finish as group runners-up, they will meet each other in the Round of 32.
