How They Qualified
Uruguay secured qualification through the notoriously demanding CONMEBOL qualifying campaign. They produced memorable victories over both Brazil and Argentina but a run of one win in nine games in the middle of the campaign saw them finish in fourth. Their aggressive pressing style and attacking approach helped them finish comfortably in the qualification places, while demonstrating that they possess the quality to compete with the continent’s traditional powerhouses. Qualification continued Uruguay’s remarkable record of appearing regularly at football’s biggest tournament.
The Manager
Marcelo Bielsa is one of the most influential coaches of the modern era. The Argentine has built a reputation for his intense pressing style, innovative tactical ideas and relentless attention to detail. Bielsa previously managed Argentina, Chile and Leeds United, transforming each side with his distinctive philosophy. The 70-year-old guided Chile to new heights in international football and became a cult hero during his time at Leeds, leading the club back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence. Since taking charge of Uruguay, he has revitalised the national team and turned them into one of South America’s most exciting sides.
The Star
Federico Valverde has developed into one of the world’s finest midfielders. The Real Madrid star has won multiple La Liga titles and UEFA Champions League trophies, establishing himself as a key figure for one of football’s biggest clubs. Renowned for his stamina, versatility and ability to influence matches in every area of the pitch, Valverde has also become the driving force of the Uruguayan national team. With 73 international appearances already to his name, the midfielder enters the tournament at the peak of his powers and will be central to Uruguay’s hopes of success.
The Familiar Face
Darwin Nunez is well known to Premier League supporters through his time with Liverpool. The striker arrived at Anfield in 2022 following an outstanding spell with Benfica and quickly became one of the most talked-about forwards in English football. While his pace, movement and work rate have made him a constant threat, his unpredictable style has also made him one of the game’s most fascinating players to watch. For Uruguay, Nunez has become a key figure in the post-Luis Suárez era and provides the cutting edge at the head of Bielsa’s attack.
Did you know?
Uruguay won the very first FIFA World Cup in 1930, defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final in Montevideo. They remain one of only eight nations to have lifted the trophy.
The Prediction
Quarter-Finals
Uruguay possess the blend of talent, experience and tactical organisation needed to progress comfortably from Group H. With Valverde controlling midfield, Núñez leading the attack and Bielsa masterminding from the touchline, they have the tools to trouble any opponent. A quarter-final appearance looks well within reach, although the depth possessed by nations such as France, Argentina and Spain may ultimately prove decisive as the tournament reaches its latter stages.
