Women’s World Cup: Late strike gives Italy win over Argentina

An 87th-minute header from Cristiana Girelli gave Italy a 1-0 win over Argentina at the Women’s World Cup.

Italy had Arianna Caruso and Valentina Giacinti goals disallowed for offside earlier in the match and it looked like Argentina were going to hold on to a point.

Juventus striker Girelli came off the bench though to head in the winner from Lisa Boattin’s deep cross.

Argentina had a great chance to equalise in stoppage time but Florencia Bonsegundo’s shot was saved by Francesca Durante.

It was Giulia Dragoni who made the headlines before kick off, named in the starting line-up at the age of 16 years and 259 days.

Dragoni made her debut for Le Azzurre just three weeks ago and her inclusion meant that third-top goalscorer Girelli was left out of the starting 11.

When Dragoni eventually tired, it was Girelli – 17 years her senior – who was introduced and ultimately made the difference with her 53rd goal in an Italy jersey.

“Cristiana is a leader, a captain of this group,” said Italy manager Milena Bertolini.

“She is always there and we know what she can give.

“We are very happy. We know how important it is to start such a tournament well.

“Giulia is a talent of Italian football.

“She was ready and she did well playing in a big stadium. If they are here, it is because they deserve it.”

The win puts Italy second in Group G. They trail Sweden on goal difference after the Swedes defeated South Africa yesterday.

Italy and Sweden meet in Wellington on Saturday with the winner likely to win the group. Argentina’s next match is against South Africa on Friday.
