World Cup Group F: Cape Verde stun Spain as Uruguay struggle to draw with Saudi Arabia

Heroic Vozinha thwarts Spain in historic stalemate

A masterclass in defensive resilience and a heroic performance from 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha saw tournament debutants Cape Verde secure a sensational 0-0 draw against reigning European champions Spain in Atlanta.

Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated almost every metric at the Atlanta Stadium, dictating the tempo through Rodri and Pedri while commanding a staggering 74% of possession. However, the decision to rest talismanic wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams stripped La Roja of their usual fluid edge, leaving Ferran Torres and Mikel Oyarzabal struggling to penetrate a disciplined five-man low block.

Spain’s best opening of the first half fell to Torres, who saw his initial effort clip the crossbar from close range before veteran stopper Vozinha produced a stunning reflex save to block the rebound. Just before the interval, Aymeric Laporte looked certain to break the deadlock, but his powerful header from a Pedri corner was spectacularly turned away by the Cape Verde captain.

As Spanish frustration mounted and the crowd began to voice their displeasure, Yamal was introduced from the bench for the final 20 minutes. The Barcelona teenager injected immediate urgency, but Cape Verde’s blue-shirted wall stood completely resolute.

In a dramatic finale, it was actually the African nation that came closest to snatching an unbelievable victory. Deep into stoppage time, Diney Borges forced an excellent save from Unai Simon, before Dani Olmo was required to make a last-ditch block from Kevin Pina to ensure Cape Verde proudly walked away with their first-ever World Cup point.

Araujo strikes late to rescue point for Uruguay

Maximiliano Araujo scored an 81st-minute equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw for Uruguay against a stubborn Saudi Arabia side in a fiercely contested Group H clash.

Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay controlled much of the early possession but lacked a clinical edge, leading to the halftime withdrawal of underperforming striker Darwin Nunez. Instead, it was the Green Falcons who shocked the two-time World Cup winners by taking the lead just before the break.

After Uruguay’s veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera could only parry a powerful, looping header from Mohamed Kanno, defender Abdulelah Al-Amri reacted quickest to poke the loose ball into the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations from the Saudi contingent.

La Celeste emerged for the second half with renewed intensity, piling immense pressure on the Saudi backline in the sweltering Miami heat. Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte came agonisingly close to an equaliser on the hour mark, unleashing a fierce drive that was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais.

Al-Owais looked unbeatable for most of the night, producing a string of world-class saves to preserve his side’s advantage and earn player-of-the-match honours. However, his clean sheet was finally spoiled nine minutes from time when he parried a header from Federico Vinas directly into the path of Araujo, who calmly slotted home from close range to share the spoils in an wide-open Group H.
