Women’s World Cup: France ease into last eight with win over Morocco
France have strolled into the Women’s World Cup quarter-finals after thrashing Morocco 4-0.
Eugenie Le Sommer led the charge with a double after goals from Kadidiatou Diani and Kenza Dali.
France will face Australia in the last eight, after they beat Denmark yesterday.
Morocco were the lowest-ranked team left in the competition and were aiming to become the first African side to reach the quarter-finals on their debut appearance.
France sit 67 places above Morocco in the world rankings and the gap in quality between the sides was clear from the start.
Diani put France ahead when she headed in unmarked after Sakina Karchaoui’s cross, and she turned provider as Dali put the ball in off the post from the edge of the penalty area.
Le Sommer then made the most of a failed clearance to make it three within the opening 23 minutes.
Her second came with 20 minutes remaining when she headed in at the far post from Vicki Becho’s cross.
