Women’s World Cup: Colombia beat Jamaica to set up England clash

Colombia will play against England in the Women’s World Cup quarter-final after a 1-0 win over Jamaica.

Catalina Usme curled in in the second half to give Colombia the win and book their place in the last eight for the first time.

Jamaica kept clean sheets in all three matches in the group stage, including goalless draws against tournament heavyweights France and Brazil, but were unable to respond once they fell behind.

Colombia fully deserved the win and created more chances than their opponents. 18-year-old Linda Caicedo had the best chance of the first half but she shot over from six yards.

The deadlock was broken in the second half though, when another of Colombia’s teenage talents, Ana Maria Guzman, sent a superb cross to Usme who finished into the far corner.

Caicedo almost added a second but was stopped by Jamaica goalkeeper Becky Spencer and Leicy Santos hit the post late on.

Jamaica struggled to create chances against a team 18 places higher than them in the world rankings. Their best chance came just moments after Usme’s goal when Jody Brown hit the post with a header.

Drew Spence also headed wide with eight minutes remaining as Jamaica were unable to find an equaliser.
