Women’s World Cup: Denmark through after beating Haiti

Denmark have qualified for the last 16 after a 2-0 win over Haiti at the Women’s World Cup.

Pernille Harder’s penalty and Sanne Troelsgaard late strike was enough to secure second place in Group D behind England.

Denmark will play co-hosts Australia on Monday, after they beat Canada in their final game to win Group B.

With China’s 6-1 loss to England, Denmark needed to avoid defeat to secure their place in the knockout rounds.

Simone Boye thought she had opened the scoring after just five minutes but her goal was disallowed by the VAR for offside.

Denmark did have the lead midway through the first stanza though after Dayana Pierre-Louis’ handball in the penalty area was punished by Bayern Munich striker Harder.

Harder then had the ball in the back of the net twice more. The first was ruled out for offside and VAR cancelled out the second after Signe Bruun’s foul on goalkeeper Kerly Theus.

Troelsgaard put the game beyond doubt 10 minutes into stoppage time after finding the bottom corner on the counter attack.
