Women’s World Cup: Sweden win Group G as Argentina knocked out

Sweden finished the Women’s World Cup group stage with a 100% record after a 2-0 victory over Argentina.

Goals from Rebecka Blomqvist and Elin Rubensson was enough to secure top spot in Group G and send Argentina out of the competition with just a single point against South Africa.

In practical terms, Sweden had already secured top spot after the first two matches thanks to a vastly superior goal difference and made nine changes from the team that thrashed Italy on Saturday.

South Africa have joined the Swedes in the second round after they beat Italy 3-2.

It took an hour for the match to come to life, with Olivia Schough heading wide with Sweden’s only real chance to that point.

Blomqvist did eventually make the breakthrough though when she headed in Sofia Jakobsson’s cross from six yards.

The Sweden forward won her team a penalty late on too when she was held by Gabriela Chavez, and Rubensson stepped up to double Sweden’s lead and put the result beyond doubt.

Sweden will face reigning champions the USA in their last-16 clash on Sunday.
