Women’s World Cup: Brazil in easy victory over Panama

Ary Borges became the first player to score a hat-trick at this year’s Women’s World Cup as Brazil despatched Panama with ease.

The 23-year-old had two before half time before assisting Bia Zaneratto with a superb backheel.

She then headed in to complete the scoring as Brazil ran out 4-0 winners.

The result puts Brazil top of Group F after France were held by Jamaica yesterday.

Debinha’s crosses were a constant threat to the Panama defence and provided both of Ary’s first-half goals.

First, the Racing Louisville player headed in at the back post before she scored off the rebound after her header was saved by Panama goalkeeper Yenith Bailey.

Ary then turned provider for Brazil’s third when she capped off a superb team move by backheeling into the path of Zaneratto to finish from 10 yards.

The hat-trick was completed in the 70th minute though with a header through Bailey’s legs.

“It was very special to get a hat-trick in my first game at a World Cup,” said Ary.

“Today is one of the happiest days of my life. I could not have imagined this in my wildest dreams.

“The day was full of emotions, I was emotional even beforehand,” she added. “I don’t think the pin has dropped yet.”

Brazil continue their campaign against France on Saturday, while Panama need to improve against Jamaica to keep any hopes of progressing alive.
