Britain’s Simon Yates has won stage 12 of the Tour de France after a sprint finish.

The Mitchelton-Stott rider edged ahead of Pello Bilbao and Gregor Muhlberger after the trio had broken clear of the pack with 32km remaining.

Defending champion Geraint Thomas remains 72 seconds behind leader Julian Alaphilippe but should gain time during Friday’s 27km time trial.

“I am very proud,” said Yates. “Hopefully there is more to come.

“I’ve been saving energy until we got here in the mountains and this was the first chance to try something,” Yates added.

“Normally I would be back helping [twin brother] Adam but I had my own chance and grabbed it with both hands.”
