Julian Alaphilippe claims yellow jersey as Geraint Thomas falls back

Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe has claimed the Tour de France yellow jersey after finishing the 218km mountain stage three in 4:40:29.

The Deceuninck-Quick Step rider went clear of the peloton with 15km to win the stage by 26 seconds to take the overall lead ahead of Jumbo-Visma’s Wout van Aert.

Britain’s Geraint Thomas finished 13th on the stage, losing five seconds to rival Egan Bernal and dropping to 45 seconds off the lead.

Le Tour continues with the 213km flat stage four tomorrow.
