Hamilton Academical and Hibernian were both held to a draw by Scottish League Two teams as the Betfred Cup group stages got underway.

Hibs had to rely on a shoot-out win to claim a bonus point against Stirling Albion after David Wilson had cancelled out Scott Allan’s first-half penalty.

Allan missed in the shootout to give Stirling a chance to take the shoot-out bonus point, but Dominic Docherty and Craig Truesdale failed to convert for the Binos.

Hamilton failed to even win the shootout against Queen’s Park. They had been held to a goalless draw and misses from Blair Alston and Darian MacKinnon handed the amateurs the bonus point.

It was a similar story for Livingston who were taken to a shootout by League One side Falkirk.

Lyndon Dykes had given Livi a first-half lead but Connor Sammon popped up in stoppage time to force the match to a shootout. Livingston converted all four spot-kicks to ensure that the Premiership side left with a bonus point.

It was an easier afternoon for Motherwell and Ross County, who defeated Queen of the South and Montrose 3-0 and 4-1 respectively.

Elsewhere, Dundee defeated Raith Rovers 3-0 in their first competitive match since relegation from the Premiership and Berwick Rangers showed why they dropped out of the SPFL by going down 7-0 against Ayr United.

It was Cove Rangers first competitive game in charge since promotion to League Two but they lost 2-1 to Peterhead.
