Romelu Lukaku scores twice as Manchester United thrash West Ham United

Manchester United have beaten West Ham United 4-0 to go top of the Premier League after the first weekend of action.

Romelu Lukaku scored twice before Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba added two more late on.

United dominated from the start but blocks from Pablo Zabaleta and a goal-line clearance by Angelo Ogbonna denied them.

Lukaku scored his first Premier League goal for United after 33 minutes, shooting into the bottom left corner after Marcus Rashford’s through ball.

West Ham’s only chance of the first half came in stoppage time but Andre Ayew’s shot was beaten away by David de Gea.

Lukaku doubled United’s lead shortly after the restart. Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s free-kick was aimed at Lukaku who headed in from eight yards.

Marko Arnautovic hit the post in a rare foray forward before Joe Hart denied Lukaku a hat trick. Rashford was then denied by the woodwork.

Martial added a third in the 87th minute finishing low from a Mkhitaryan through ball and Pogba scored the fourth two minutes later when he curled a shot into the bottom right corner.
