Republic of Ireland’s poor form continues with Qatar friendly draw
Republic of Ireland ended a disappointing international window with a 1-1 draw against Qatar in Hungary.
Ireland got off to the worst possible start to their World Cup qualifying campaign earlier this week after defeats to Serbia and Luxembourg and more disappointment followed when a Mohammed Muntari strike cancelled out James McClean’s opener.
Stephen Kenny’s side impressed in the early stages though and took the lead from a neat corner routine. The ball was played into McClean who scored from 12 yards via a deflection.
Qatar were initially awarded a penalty with their next attack when goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu brought down Pedro Miguel but the assistant referee correctly ruled that the foul took place just outside the penalty area.
Miguel caused more problems for Ireland moments later when his cross found Almoez Ali, but the striker headed wide.
Qatar hit back just after the start of the second half when Ali found Muntari who curled the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Hassan Al Haydos and Muntari both had chances to give Qatar the lead but Bazunu kept them out.
Just as the full-time whistle was about to sound, Josh Cullen nearly gave Ireland the victory but his header was saved by Saad al-Sheed.
