Republic of Ireland’s shocking form continued with a 1-0 defeat at home to Luxembourg.

A late Gerson Rodrigues strike consigned Ireland to a second successive loss in the World Cup qualifiers.

Luxembourg matched Ireland throughout and could have taken the lead in the first half when Dynamo Kyiv forward Rodrigues tested debutant goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.

Vincent Thill had another chance for Luxembourg on the hour mark but his shot was stopped by the Rochdale goalkeeper.

James Collins should have found the net twice. He was denied by Anthony Moris in the first half and saw a spectacular bicycle kick float narrowly wide of the right post with 20 minutes to spare.

Luxembourg found the breakthrough with just five minutes remaining when Rodrigues picked up a long ball before firing low past Bazunu from 30 yards.

Ireland’s World Cup qualifying campaign continues in June when they travel to Andorra and Hungary.
