McGhee will not be in the dugout for six matches though after incurring a touchline ban while manager of Motherwell in 2017.
The 64-year-old has not been in a managerial role since a short spell at Eastbourne Borough and most recently assisted Simon Rusk at National League side Stockport County.
McGhee will now be assisted by Rusk and Dave Mackay.
Dundee currently sit just one point above bottom side St Johnstone and six points adrift of 10th-placed Ross County.
