Crystal Palace have signed loan player Jean-Philippe Mateta on a permanent deal from Bundesliga side Mainz.

The striker has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal for a fee believed to be around £9m.

“We are delighted to secure the long-term future of Jean-Philippe. Coming to a new country, a new team and a new league is not easy and JP worked incredibly hard to get and then take his opportunities,” chairman Steve Parish said.

“He really has shown the aptitude, attitude and dedication we look for along with his natural footballing ability. I’m looking forward to seeing much more of him in a Palace shirt.”

Mateta joined Palace on an initial 18-month loan deal in January 2021 but has scored just three goals in 16 appearances.

Two of those goals were scored in his last five games for the club though, and an career goals ratio of 66 from 154 appearances was enough to persuade Palace to make the deal permanent.
