How They Qualified
Austria secured their place at the World Cup through UEFA qualifying after topping a group containing Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania. Rangnick’s side combined relentless work rate with attacking quality, collecting crucial points throughout the campaign. Qualification continued the nation’s upward trajectory and ensured Austria would return to the World Cup finals determined to build upon the progress made in recent years.
The Manager
Ralf Rangnick is widely regarded as one of the most influential coaches in modern football. Often described as the godfather of the Gegenpressing style, the German has shaped the careers and philosophies of numerous elite managers, including Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel. Rangnick enjoyed successful spells with clubs such as Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig before taking charge of Austria in 2022. The 67-year-old has transformed the national side into a highly organised and aggressive outfit capable of competing with Europe’s best teams.
The Star
David Alaba remains the cornerstone of Austrian football. The versatile defender has enjoyed one of the most decorated careers of any Austrian player, winning multiple Bundesliga titles and UEFA Champions League trophies with Bayern Munich before adding further silverware with Real Madrid. Capable of playing in defence, midfield and even as a playmaker, Alaba’s leadership and experience are invaluable. As captain, he remains the figure around whom Austria’s ambitions are built.
The Familiar Face
Marko Arnautovic will be well known to Premier League supporters thanks to his spells with Stoke City and West Ham United. The charismatic forward spent nearly a decade in English football, becoming renowned for his technical ability, physical presence and larger-than-life personality. Since leaving the Premier League, Arnautovic has continued his career in Italy and elsewhere while cementing his status as one of Austria’s most-capped players. His experience and knack for producing important goals make him a valuable member of the squad.
Did you know?
Austria were one of the world’s strongest football nations during the 1930s. Their legendary side, known as the ‘Wunderteam’, went 14 matches unbeaten and helped revolutionise the passing game long before modern tiki-taka.
The Prediction
Round of 16
Austria have been handed a favourable group compared to many European sides. Argentina are expected to top Group J, but Austria will fancy their chances against Algeria and Jordan. Rangnick’s side possess the organisation and quality needed to secure a top-two finish, while the expanded format offers an additional safety net through the best third-placed rankings. Progression to the knockout stages looks highly achievable, and a place in the Round of 16 appears a realistic expectation. Beyond that, much will depend on the calibre of opponent they encounter in the knockout bracket.
