Liverpool have progressed to the Champions League second round with two games to spare after a comfortable win over Atletico Madrid.

Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane’s first-half goals put Liverpool ahead before Felipe’s red card.

Trent Alexander-Arnold set up Jota for the opener with a brilliant whipped cross.

The England full-back then put the ball towards the back post for Mane to convert.

Felipe effectively ended the contest inside the opening 36 minutes when he was sent off after a hack at Mane’s heels.

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez did have the ball in the back of the net but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The Reds could have added to the scoreline in the second half too, but missed a number of chances and saw a second Jota goal chalked off by the video assistant referee.

Liverpool are guaranteed top spot in Group B and sit seven points clear of second-placed Porto.
