World Cup Preview: Cape Verde

Cape Verde head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the tournament’s most intriguing underdogs after qualifying for the finals for the first time in their history. The Blue Sharks have steadily risen through African football in recent years, reaching the semi-final at the Africa Cup of Nations and earning a reputation for their organisation and resilience. Simply reaching the tournament is a historic achievement, but they will believe they can spring a surprise or two on the biggest stage.

Fixtures (UK time)

Spain, June 15, 5pm
Saudi Arabia, June 20, 8pm
Uruguay, June 25, 8pm

How They Qualified

Cape Verde secured their place at a World Cup for the first time by finishing top of CAF qualifying Group D. They ended ahead of Cameroon, Angola, Libya, Eswatini and Mauritius, losing just once during the campaign. A crucial victory over Cameroon proved pivotal in the standings, while their defensive organisation and ability to grind out results allowed them to hold off more established rivals. Qualification marked the greatest achievement in the nation’s football history and capped a remarkable rise for a country with a population of little more than half a million.

The Manager

Bubista has become one of the most influential figures in Cape Verdean football. A former international midfielder, he took charge of the national team in 2020 and has overseen the most successful period in the country’s history. The 55-year-old guided Cape Verde to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before leading them to their first-ever World Cup qualification. Known for building a disciplined and hard-working side, the former Sporting Praia coach has created a team capable of competing with Africa’s traditional heavyweights despite limited resources.

The Star

Dailon Livramento has emerged as one of the brightest talents in Cape Verde’s squad. The versatile forward made his international breakthrough during the World Cup qualifying campaign and quickly became a key attacking outlet. Capable of playing across the front line, Livramento combines pace, direct running and an eye for goal. Still in the early stages of his international career, the forward represents the next generation of Cape Verdean footballers and will carry much of the team’s attacking hopes into their historic first appearance at the World Cup.

The Familiar Face

Roberto Carlos Lopes has enjoyed a long and successful career with Shamrock Rovers. Born in Dublin and known by the nickname ‘Pico’, the central defender spent six seasons with Bohemians before joining Shamrock Rovers in 2017. Since then he has won multiple League of Ireland titles, captained the club and helped Rovers enjoy some of the most successful years in their history, including memorable European campaigns. Eligible for Cape Verde through his father, Lopes made his international debut in 2019, after receiving a message on LinkedIn, and has since become a cornerstone of the national side. He will become the first player to play in the World Cup whilst at a club in the League of Ireland.

Did you know?

Cape Verde’s nickname, the Blue Sharks, comes from the shark-filled waters surrounding the Atlantic archipelago. Despite the country’s small population, it has become one of Africa’s most successful footballing nations relative to its size.

The Prediction

Group Stage

Cape Verde have already achieved history by reaching their first World Cup and possess enough organisation and spirit to make life difficult for their opponents. However, a group containing Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia represents a significant challenge for a squad lacking World Cup experience. They could pick up their first points at the tournament, but progressing to the knockout stages may prove just beyond them, with Spain and Uruguay likely to occupy the top two places.
