Women’s World Cup: China survive red card to defeat Haiti

A Wang Shuang penalty was enough to give China a win over Haiti at the Women’s World Cup.

China played most of the match with 10 men after Zhang Rui was shown the red card by the VAR after she went in with her studs on Sherly Jeudy’s knee.

The result means that England have not yet confirmed their place in the last 16 despite beating Denmark earlier today.

All four teams could still qualify from Group D. England play China on Tuesday and need a point to qualify as group winners, while Haiti could still go through if they beat Denmark and China lose to England.

Despite being a player up for most of the match, Haiti failed to make an impression on the China defence with Melchie Dumornay’s tipped effort their only shot on target.

There was almost a dramatic finish though when deep into stoppage time referee Marta Huerta de Aza gave a penalty for a foul on Roselin Eloissaint. After a check of the pitchside monitor though, she overturned her decision and China held on to the three points.
