Super League: St Helens extend lead by beating Leeds, Huddersfield edge out Catalans

St Helens needed a last-minute drop goal to beat Leeds Rhinos 23-22 in the Super League.

With the teams level going into the last few minutes, Danny Richardson directed the ball through the posts to give St Helens the crucial final point needed to stretch their lead at the top of the table to eight points.

Tom Briscoe had given Leeds an early lead before Ben Barba and Jonny Lomax crossed. Briscoe’s second try levelled the score and, after Mark Percival scored, Mitch Garbutt and Brett Ferres put Leeds six points ahead.

Ryan Morgan made it 22-22 late on before Richardson’s drop goal gave Saints the win.

Just a point separated Huddersfield Giants and Catalans Dragons in the second match of the night, with Huddersfield eventually triumphing 26-25.

It started horribly for Huddersfield, though, with Brayden Wiliame, Vincent Duport and David Mead giving Catalans an 18-0 lead within the opening 16 minutes.

Alex Mellor, Darnell McIntosh and Jermaine McGillvary scored for Huddersfield before halftime but Catalans took a 24-14 lead into the break after Remi Casty’s score.

Huddersfield dominated the second half though, with tries from Adam O’Brien and McGillvary drawing them level.

Tony Gigot’s drop goal late on nudged Catalans into the lead but Oliver Russell’s penalty gave Huddersfield the victory by the narrowest of margins.
