Spain slip up again as Poland keep Euro 2020 hopes alive

Poland have held Spain to a draw at Euro 2020 to keep their chances of progressing to the knockout rounds alive.

Robert Lewandowski scored in the second half to cancel out Alvaro Morata’s opener.

Gerard Moreno should have won it for Spain in the second half but his penalty hit the left post.

The result means Poland still sit bottom of Group E but they will progress if they beat Sweden on Wednesday.

Spain have just two points from the first two matches but will still be expected to beat Slovakia in the final group game to book their place in the next round.

Morata’s opener was given after a video assistant referee review showed he stayed narrowly onside when he turned in a cross from six yards.

Moreno nearly doubled the lead before halftime when he sent a free-kick just wide of the left post.

Karol Swiderski caused the Spain defence problems but the PAOK striker shot over the crossbar before firing against the left post.

And Lewandowski nearly equalised just before the break but Unai Simon saved superbly from close range.

The Bayern Munich man did get his goal 10 minutes after the restart, getting onto the end of Kamil Jozwiak’s cross to head into the left side of the net.

Spain then won a soft penalty when the video assistant referee deemed that Moreno had been fouled. The 29-year-old stepped up to take it himself but the ball smashed off the left post and Morata missed from the rebound.

Morata could have scored a late winner but his shot was well saved by Wojciech Szczesny.
