Scotland keep Euros hopes alive with England draw

Scotland have held England to an unlikely goalless draw to keep their chances of progressing to the Euro 2020 knockout rounds alive.

The Three Lions were nowhere near their best and Scotland had chances to win the game in the second half.

The introduction of Che Adams and Billy Gilmour revitalised the Scots, who had lost to the Czech Republic in their opening game.

Chelsea’s Gilmour was particularly impressive on his first Scotland start and stopped England from creating in attack.

The Three Lions should have had the opening goal though when John Stones lost his marker at a corner to head onto the post.

Mason Mount could also have netted when he took the ball off Scott McTominay before firing wide.

The Scottish back three of McTominay, Grant Hanley and Kieran Tierney did not put a foot wrong for the rest of the game though. Harry Kane was nowhere near his best and was eventually replaced after struggling to make an impact.

Stephen O’Donnell forced Jordan Pickford into a superb save to keep England level with a volley from Tierney’s cross and Adams had a brilliant chance to score but headed wide from a rebound.

England’s lethargy continued into the second half and Lyndon Dykes nearly made them pay. His shot beat Pickford but Reece James was there to head the ball away.

The Three Lions could have nicked a win late on after a scramble in the penalty area but John McGinn eventually cleared.

For Scotland, they now have to win against Croatia on Tuesday to have a chance of going through. England need to beat Czech Republic to secure top spot but could still drop to third with a loss.
