France were enjoying the better of the play but it was Portugal who opened the scoring. Hugo Lloris came out to punch away a cross but his fist met Danilo’s face and Ronaldo stepped up to send the penalty past the Tottenham goalkeeper.

Another penalty was awarded in first-half stoppage time. This time, the video assistant referee gave a foul by Nelson Semedo and Benzema beat Rui Patricio to equalise.

And France were ahead just after the restart when Paul Pogba played in Benzema to finish in off the left post.

For the first time in Euros history, three penalties were awarded in the same game. It did not look like Jules Kounde could have done much to get his hand out of the way of a cross but the spot-kick was given and Ronaldo sent the ball low into the left of the net to score his second of the game.

Pogba and Antoine Griezmann both had shots saved by Rui Patricio and France had another penalty appeal late on.

This time, Kingsley Coman went down but, after another review, the penalty was not given and the result remained a draw.
