England finish top of Group D after win over Czech Republic

England have finished top of Group D after beating Czech Republic at Euro 2020.

Raheem Sterling headed in the only goal of the game to secure a last-16 match at Wembley next week.

It was Sterling who had the first chance of the game inside the opening two minutes when he chipped the ball over the goalkeeper onto the outside of the right post.

Jack Grealish was making his first start of the tournament and was instrumental in the goal. The Aston Villa man delivered a perfect cross to find Sterling at the back post to head in from close range.

Harry Kane came close to scoring his first goal of the tournament when he broke clear but Tomas Vaclik parried the ball behind.

Both teams struggled to create from there though. Tomas Soucek struck just wide of the post and Tomas Holes’ shot was saved by Jordan Pickford before the break.

Jordan Henderson had the ball in the net late on but the goal was ruled out for offside.

England now face a second-round tie against France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary at Wembley next Tuesday.
