World Cup Preview: Switzerland

Switzerland haven’t missed out on qualifying for the World Cup since 2002 and have reached the knockout rounds on three of their last four finals appearances. This year, they come in as the 18th-ranked country in the world and Murat Yakin’s team will be hopeful of impressing again this time around.

How They Qualified

Switzerland went unbeaten in qualifying and conceded just two goals in eight games on their way to qualifying as group winners. An impressive 4-1 win over Sweden was followed by a 1-1 draw against group runners-up Kosovo to secure their place at the tournament.

The Manager

Murat Yakin made 49 appearances for Switzerland in his playing career, and took charge of the national team in 2021 after spending 12 of his 13 years in club management in his native country. This World Cup will be the third major tournament of his international managerial career, after guiding Switzerland to the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.

The Star

Granit Xhaka has been a vital part of the Switzerland team for 15 years now, and his 146 caps is unmatched amongst his countrymen. The 33-year-old is best known for his seven-year stint in the heart of Arsenal’s midfield, but most recently captained Sunderland to a surprise European qualification in the first season of their Premier League return.

The Familiar Face

Central defender Manuel Akanji made 85 appearances for Manchester City before spending last season on loan at Inter Milan. As Switzerland’s strongest defender, he’s been capped 81 times. Last season, he added an Italian league and cup double to his two Premier League and one Champions League winners medal that he won with City.

Switzerland hosted the 1954 World Cup and their 7-5 loss to Austria remains the highest-scoring game in World Cup history.

The Prediction

Quarter Finals

Switzerland will be aiming to progress from Group B as group winners. They haven’t reached the last eight since the 1950s but have the talent to go deep into the tournament.
