World Cup Preview: England

England arrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup carrying familiar expectations and renewed optimism. After reaching the semi-finals in 2018 and the quarter-finals in 2022, the Three Lions have consistently challenged at major tournaments without quite getting over the line. With Thomas Tuchel now in charge and a squad packed with talent across every position, England will believe they have a genuine chance of ending their long wait for World Cup glory.

Fixtures (UK time)

Croatia, June 17, 9pm
Ghana, June 23, 9pm
Panama, June 27, 10pm

How They Qualified

England qualified comfortably through UEFA qualifying, once again demonstrating the depth of talent available to the national team. The Three Lions scored freely throughout the campaign and didn’t concede a goal throughout the entire campaign. They won all eight matches to finish 10 points ahead of runners-up Albania. Qualification continued England’s impressive record of reaching major tournaments and ensured they would arrive at the World Cup among the favourites.

The Manager

Thomas Tuchel became England manager after establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches of his generation. The German enjoyed major success with Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, winning league titles in multiple countries and leading Chelsea to UEFA Champions League glory in 2021. Renowned for his tactical flexibility and attention to detail, Tuchel was appointed with one objective above all others: delivering a major international trophy. The World Cup represents his first opportunity to achieve that goal with England.

The Star

Harry Kane remains the focal point of England’s attack and the nation’s all-time leading goalscorer with 79 goals. The striker enjoyed a remarkable club career with Tottenham Hotspur before moving to Bayern Munich, where he has added two Bundesliga titles and a German Cup to an already outstanding individual record. Kane won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup with six goals and has consistently delivered for his country across multiple tournaments. As captain, leader and chief goalscorer, England’s hopes of lifting the trophy will once again rest heavily on his shoulders.

The Familiar Face

Declan Rice stands out even in a squad filled with Premier League stars. The Arsenal captain and England vice-captain has developed into one of the world’s leading midfielders since emerging at West Ham United. Renowned for his leadership, defensive intelligence and ability to drive his team forward, Rice has become an indispensable figure for both club and country. While supporters will recognise stars from Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and beyond throughout the squad, the Arsenal skipper embodies the leadership and consistency that England hope will carry them deep into the tournament.

Did you know?

England’s only World Cup-winning captain, Bobby Moore, once had to be released on bail during the build-up to the 1970 World Cup after being accused of stealing a bracelet from a jewellery shop in Colombia. The charges were eventually dropped and he went on to captain England at the tournament.

The Prediction

Semi-Finals

England possess the quality to win the World Cup, but history suggests caution is warranted. Tuchel has inherited a squad packed with elite talent and should guide the Three Lions comfortably through Group L. The expanded format is unlikely to trouble a team of England’s calibre, and they should be expected to navigate the early knockout rounds. However, as in previous tournaments, the decisive test will come against fellow heavyweights such as France, Argentina or Spain. England have every chance of reaching the last four, but overcoming multiple elite opponents in succession remains the challenge that has repeatedly proved their undoing.
