World Cup Preview: Curacao

Curaçao enter the tournament looking to pull off the ultimate sporting miracle, having defied all odds to become the smallest nation by both population and area to reach a FIFA World Cup. The Caribbean islanders arrive in North America as total wildcards, completely unburdened by pressure and backed by a passionate fanbase spanning from Willemstad to Amsterdam. Under a legendary coaching regime, expectations are simply to show their technical identity on the global stage and compete fiercely against the world’s elite.

Fixtures (UK time)

Germany, 14 June, 6pm
Ecuador, 21 June, 1am

How They Qualified

Curaçao pulled off a logic-defying, unbeaten run through the gruelling CONCACAF qualification tree to punch their historic ticket to the finals. After topping their second-round group ahead of fellow qualifiers Haiti, the Blue Wave finished above Caribbean heavyweights Jamaica in the final qualifying stage to reach their first World Cup without needing to go through a dreaded playoff.

The Manager

Dick Advocaat has orchestrated a remarkable final chapter to his career, guiding the tiny island nation to their first-ever tournament. The ex-Netherlands boss briefly stepped down earlier in the year due to private family matters, but his highly anticipated return to the dugout just before the finals has brought immense structural calm and elite tournament know-how.

The Familiar Face

Recognisable for more than just his Valderrama-esque hairstyle, Tahith Chong played five games for Manchester United after graduating from their academy. He has gone on to play for Birmingham City and Sheffield United, and made 33 Premier League appearances for Luton Town in the 2023-24 season.

Did you know?

Chong is the only player in the 26-man squad to be born in Curacao. The other 25 players were all born in the Netherlands. The country was part of the Netherlands Antilles until its dissolution in 2010, and remains part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Prediction

Group Stage

While Curacao’s presence at the finals is a truly heartwarming footballing fairytale, Group E represents a brutally unforgiving environment. Advocaat’s well-drilled side will undoubtedly fight with immense pride, but the sheer world-class depth of Germany, a physical Ivory Coast, and a seasoned Ecuador team will surely result in a Group Stage exit.
