World Cup Preview: Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s only previous tournament appearance was at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. They return to the biggest stage after a sensational shootout play-off win over Italy.

Fixtures (UK time)

Canada, June 12, 8pm
Switzerland, June 18, 8pm
Qatar, June 24, 8pm

How They Qualified

Bosnia had already exceeded expectations by getting to the playoffs by finishing just two points off automatic qualification. Before that famous win over Italy, they needed penalties to overcome Wales in the semi-final.

The Manager

Sergej Barbarez walked into the Bosnia manager’s job having with no managerial experience, 16 years since retiring after a decent career in Germany as a centre forward. The 47-cap man previously stated he wanted to manage his country as far back as 2009. His appointment surprised many, but, so far, it’s looking like a great decision by the Bosnian FA.

The Star

Edin Dzeko was Bosnia’s superstar when they last appeared in the World Cup 12 years ago. Now at 40, he remains their talisman. He has scored for Bosnia in every year since 2007, and comes into tournament in fine form after six goals in 11 appearances since signing for Schalke in January.

The Familiar Face

Premier League fans will likely recognize Sead Kolasinac after he spent five seasons at Arsenal between 2017 and 2022. The 32-year-old defender now plies his trade at Atalanta, having spent a season in Marseille.

Did you know?

The Bosnian domestic league is ranked as the 38th-best league in Europe. That’s just behind Finland, Iceland and Latvia and only just above the Faroe Islands top division. As a result, 18-year-old uncapped goalkeeper Mladen Jurkas is the only squad member who plays in his home country.

The Prediction

Round of 32

Bosnia should have enough about them to beat Qatar, which may be enough to progress. Another win over Canada or Switzerland would make their route through the knockout rounds easier.
