Swansea City rearguard keep Liverpool at bay to earn shock win

Swansea City have beaten Liverpool 1-0 in the Premier League to move to within one point of safety.

Central defender Alfie Mawson scored the only goal of the game just before halftime to earn Swansea a vital three points as they look to stave off relegation under Carlos Carvalhal.

Roberto Firmino came closest for Liverpool when his header struck the post late on.

Liverpool could have gone ahead a number of times, but Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah both missed the target before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s shot was stopped by Lukasz Fabianski.

Van Dijk was at fault for Swansea’s goal. First, the £75m defender headed two successive crosses behind for corners.

The second corner came in and Van Dijk’s attempted clearance struck Swansea captain Federico Fernandez. The ball fell for Mawson who fired in with his right foot.

Fabianski was called into action again in the second half to keep out shots from Salah, Danny Ings and Van Dijk.

At the death, Firmino finally looked to have beaten the Swansea goalkeeper but his header rebounded off the left post.
