Pro12 agree two-team expansion

The Pro12 has agreed a deal to add two South African teams to the competition from next season.

The Cheetahs and the Southern Kings lost their Super Rugby status this year and will join the new Pro14 league when it starts in September.

The deal will provide an extra £6m per year from the South African Rugby Union and additional television revenue.

It is most likely that the Pro14 will be split into two seven-team conferences with one Scottish side, one South African side, one Italian side and two each from Wales and Ireland in each.

The teams will play every other team in their conference twice, and all teams in the other conference once.

Derby games will be preserved with local rivals facing each other another two times during the season, creating a total of 21 games for each team over the course of the season.

Other formats are also being discussed.
