Newcastle United have completed the signing of Aston Villa defender Matt Targett on loan until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old left-back joins as Newcastle’s fourth signing of the transfer window following the arrivals of Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes.

“I’m delighted to be here. I can’t wait to get going and meet all the fans and hopefully we can have a successful end to the season,” Targett told the club’s official website.

“My family have friends here and they’ve always said it’s a football-mad city, so to experience it and be part of it – I’m really looking forward to it.”

Targett has made 17 Premier League appearances for Villa this season and will link up with his new Newcastle teammates ahead of their home game against Everton next Tuesday.

Newcastle are also on the verge of completing the £13m transfer of Brighton defender Dan Burn but were unable to complete a move for Jesse Lingard.
