Elite League: Cardiff Devils stretch lead, Fife Flyers slip up

Cardiff Devils have increased their lead at the top of the Elite League after an 8-3 win over Guildford Flames.

The Devils raced into a 4-0 lead at the first intermission through Matt Pope, Sean Bentivoglio, Matthew Myers and Joey Martin.

Ian Watters replied on the powerplay 03:32 into the second period with Kruise Reddick netting for the Flames shorthanded.

Tyson Strachan and a second goal for Pope meant Cardiff kept hold of their four-goal lead going into the third period.

Martin added a sixth on the powerplay 49 seconds into the third period before Kevin Phillips replied. Gleason Fournier completed the scoring with two minutes to spare.

Third-placed Fife Flyers fell to a 5-2 defeat against Coventry Blaze.

The Blaze special teams dominated throughout with Jordan Pietrus and Adam Courchaine scoring on the powerplay and Brett Robinson netting while shorthanded.

Liam Heelis and Russell Moyer replied for Fife but a late goal by Ben Lake and a Pietrus empty-netter sealed the win for Coventry.

Bottom club Edinburgh Capitals earned their second league win of the season by beating Manchester Storm 4-3.

Two goals from Ainars Podzins led the Caps to victory after goals from Sergei Banashkov and Mike Cazzola.

Ciaran Long, Linden Springer and Dallas Erhardt found the net for Manchester.

In a Gardiner Conference match-up, Braehead Clan eased past Dundee Stars 7-3.

Two goals each from Jacob Doty and Brendan Brooks sandwiched a Robert Lepine strike, with Omar Pacha and Marc-Oliver Mimar netting for the Stars.

Mimar added a third for Dundee with six minutes remaining but goals from Lepine and Craig Cescon completed the scoring for Braehead.
