Bury have returned to League One at the first attempt after a 1-1 draw against Tranmere Rovers was enough to secure promotion from League Two with a game to spare.

The result puts second-placed Bury two points ahead of Mansfield and MK Dons, who play each other on the final day to determine who takes the final automatic promotion place.

James Norwood struck in the 11th minute to give Tranmere the lead but Danny Mayor’s second-half equaliser ensured that Bury would join League Two champions Lincoln City in the third tier next season.

Bury will be hoping for a more successful return to League One this time around. In the 2017/18 season, they only managed eight wins and 36 points and finished bottom of the division.

Elsewhere in League Two, Newport County rose into a play-off place after a 2-0 win over Oldham Athletic.
