Australian Open: Nadal, Dimitrov through, Sock shocked by Sugita

Rafael Nadal and Grigor Dimitrov have both advanced to the second round of the Australian Open after straight-sets wins.

World number one Nadal eased past Dominican Victor Estrella Burgos 6-1 6-1 6-1 in just 97 minutes.

Dimitrov got through his opening tie against Austrian qualifier Dennis Novak with similar ease, winning 6-3 6-2 6-1 in 99 minutes.

    The biggest shock of the opening day in the men’s draw came as eighth seed Jack Sock lost in four sets to world number 41 Yuichi Sugita.

    The Japanese player beat the American 6-1 7-6 5-7 6-3 and will meet Ivo Karlovic in the second round.

    Elsewhere, sixth seed Marin Cilic overcame Canadian qualifer Vasek Pospisil 6-2 6-2 4-6 7-6 and 10th seed Pablo Carreno-Busta beat Australian wildcard Jason Kubler 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-1.
