Liverpool assistant manager Zeljko Buvac has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Arsene Wenger as Arsenal manager this summer.

Buvac has worked as assistant manager to Jurgen Klopp for the past 17 years, at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, but could finally return to management at the Emirates next season.

The Bosnian went on a leave of absence for “personal reasons” on Monday but remains under contract at Liverpool.

“Zeljko is spending some time away from the first-team environment, between now and the end of the season, for personal reasons,” Liverpool said in a statement.

“The club considers the matter to be private and therefore will respect that privacy by not making any further comment. Zeljko remains a Liverpool employee and his position at the club is not affected by this absence.”

Buvac has previously been described as “the brain” of Klopp’s coaching team.
