WSL roundup: Manchester City go top, Arsenal defeat Tottenham

Manchester City have moved to the top of the Women’s Super League table after a 1-0 win over mid-table Reading.

City needed a late goal from Chloe Kelly to seal the victory after an impressive performance from Reading goalkeeper Grace Moloney.

Moloney pulled off a string of saves to keep City at bay in the first half. Lauren Hemp hit the post before Georgia Stanway missed a superb opportunity from close range.

Rose Lavelle also saw her shot tipped over by Moloney with chances also falling to Lucy Bronze and Caroline Weir.

Just as it looked like Reading were going to be going home with a point, Hemp jinked past four defenders before squaring to Kelly to tap in from inside the six-yard box.

Chelsea will regain top spot if they avoid defeat to relegation battlers Aston Villa on Sunday.

In the North London derby, Arsenal eased past Tottenham to record a fourth-straight WSL win.

Caitlin Foord and Vivianne Miedema put Arsenal in control at the break before Katie McCabe added a third in the second half.

Arsenal dominated their opponents at an empty Tottenham Hotspur stadium and recorded 26 shots on target.

Foord opened the scoring when she finished into the bottom right corner before Miedema’s volley doubled the lead. McCabe put the icing on the cake on the hour mark when she pounced on a defensive error to finish past Rebecca Spencer.

Arsenal remain three points behind Manchester United in the race for the final Champions League place though.

Lauren James and Christen Press scored as United claimed victory over West Ham as Old Trafford hosted a WSL match for the first time.

James headed in from a corner to open the scoring just after the break before Press powered in a second six minutes later.

West Ham are now winless in seven WSL matches and sit a point behind Bristol City and Aston Villa.
