Women’s Champions League: Chelsea hold firm but Manchester City struggle

Chelsea will take a one-goal lead into the Women’s Champions League quarter-final first leg after defeating Wolfsburg in Budapest.

It was the Germans who dominated but goals from Sam Kerr and Pernille Harder led them to a 2-1 win.

Wolfsburg twice hit the woodwork before Ewa Pajor’s bicycle kick was cleared off the line and a strong defensive display paired with some good saves from Ann-Katrin Berger saw Chelsea through.

Chelsea opened the scoring in the 55th minute when Kerr finished after a superb Fran Kirby through ball and the lead was doubled when Harder scored against her old club.

Dominique Janssen scored what could prove to be a crucial away goal from the penalty spot but Chelsea survived a late onslaught to hold onto the win.

The two teams meet in the Hungarian capital next Wednesday due to coronavirus restrictions preventing Wolfsburg from travelling to the UK.

Chelsea look like they will be England’s only representative in the semi-final if they progress though, after Manchester City fell 3-0 to Barcelona.

Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring before Mariona Caldentey’s penalty.

Chloe Kelly should have pulled a goal back for City but her penalty was saved before Jenni Hermoso made it three late on from close range.
