Wales earn crucial World Cup qualifying win over Czech Republic
Dan James scored a late goal to give Wales a vital win over Czech Republic in World Cup qualifying Group E.
The 1-0 victory has given Wales their first three points of the campaign and brings them to within two points of the top two with a game in hand.
Both teams ended with 10 men after red cards to Patrik Schick and Connor Roberts and it was Manchester United winger James who headed in nine minutes from time from Gareth Bale’s cross.
Bale could have given Wales the lead in the first half but his shot was tipped over by Tomas Vaclik.
Wales gained a numerical advantage after the break when Schick was sent off for raising his hand to Roberts. The Swansea City full-back was booked for his part in the altercation and received a second yellow card in the 77th minute to even the numbers.
James made the breakthrough four minutes later though when a superb Bale cross met him eight yards from goal to head into the bottom corner.
Ondrej Celustka looked to have equalised deep into stoppage time but Tottenham’s Joe Rodon made a superb block.
Attention now turns towards Euro 2020 preparations for Wales and their opening group game against Switzerland on June 12.
